DETROIT - It was a very simple and obvious statement: Chris Woodward said Wednesday that he wants to play Danny Santana more regularly.
It was what was left unsaid that stood out.
It is this: If Santana is going to play more, somebody (or somebodies) is going to play less often. With the outfield jam-packed and perhaps more so next week if Hunter Pence returns from the IL, the only real options are on the right side of the infield. Particularly: Second base. That's where Santana was Wednesday; Rougned Odor was on the bench.
Before we continue, let's just state it up front: Woodward is not benching Odor.
