SURPRISE, Ariz. -- When Chris Woodward became the Rangers' manager, he did something non-traditional.
Woodward refused to dump the entire coaching staff of his predecessor: Jeff Banister. Woodward recognized the talent that was in place and kept three of Banister's coaches: Tony Beasley, Hector Ortiz and Don Wakamatsu.
"To have those guys already here, I'm very fortunate," Woodward said on Monday before a 4-all tie against Colorado.
Wakamatsu is the veteran bench coach, an ideal sounding board for a rookie manager. Ortiz works with catchers and is also part of the base-running operation as the first-base coach.
