On Monday, St. Louis promoted minor league manager Stubby Clapp to its major league coaching staff. Clapp had been a candidate for the Rangers' vacancy. He did two telephone interviews and one in-person session with the Rangers during their pro scouting meetings last week in Surprise, Ariz.
Clapp told the Windsor Star newspaper that he took the St. Louis job after the Rangers informed him they were going in a different direction.
The Rangers started the process by interviewing seven candidates: Chicago Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde, Houston bench coach Joe Espada, Tampa Bay major league field coordinator Rocco Baldelli, San Francisco director of player development David Bell, Philadelphia third base coach Dusty Wathan, former New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi and assistant general manager Jayce Tingler.
