An upside-down philosophy has helped turn around the Rangers' starting rotation -- then there's Drew Smyly

ARLINGTON - As the season has developed, it has become evident that only one thing stands between the Rangers and a potentially workable starting rotation.

It is Drew Smyly.

On Tuesday, a couple hours after manager Chris Woodward lauded the rotation's work the last two weeks as the Rangers surged to holding the AL's second wild card spot, Smyly immediately ran into a wall against the worst team in the majors.

He allowed a three-run homer in the first inning, then allowed a homer right behind it and needed 40 pitches to get through the inning.
