BOSTON - The transformation of Isiah Kiner-Falefa into an unprecedented hybrid of a major leaguer who can play multiple positions and catch has been a three-step process. First, he played the infield, exclusively. Then, he caught, exclusively.
Phase Three - being able to move regularly between both - began in earnest Monday.
Kiner-Falefa started at third base in the Rangers’ 5-0 loss to Boston. It was his first start at a position other than catcher since June 19. Since June 20, all six of his starts, including Sunday, had been behind the plate.
The decision to add the infield back to his list of responsibilities speaks to how well the Rangers believe he has handled the transition.
