The Texas Rangers still have around $10-12 million in payroll with which to work, but could very well hold onto that cash until injury concerns on the roster are resolved one way or the other.
No matter how active the Rangers were in talks at the winter meetings, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News says that one key factor kept them from diving all-in on free agents and/or the trade market.
"The more the Rangers talked, though, the more they realized one player in December wasn’t going to solve their issues if they don’t have a healthy and productive Prince Fielder, Shin-Soo Choo, Mitch Moreland, Yu Darvish, Derek Holland and Tanner Scheppers, just to name a half-dozen of their injury-comeback question marks," Grant wrote in an article posted on Saturday.
For general manager Jon Daniels, the time is now to assess the current roster construct and get as many key pieces healthy as possible.
“At this time, the prudent move is to be patient,” Daniels said at the close of the winter meetings. “As we go forward, there will be more opportunities. There will always be opportunities, but what it comes down to first is health and the development of our young guys.”
