The Texas Longhorns are 2-0 on the season after a dominant 41-7 victory over UTEP, and there doesn't seem to be any stopping the Horns. They avoided a let down game on a short week after beating Notre Dame on Monday, putting forth another impressive performance. Here are three things we learned from the game.
1) Shane Buechele isn't just a good starting quarterback - he's a Heisman candidate
This isn't just hype anymore - Buechele is the real deal. he followed up an excellent performance against the Fighting Irish with and ever better game, completing 22/27 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He has total command of this offense and is making all of the right reads on the field. There shouldn't be much more talk about a two-QB system. Buechele is the guy for the next three years, and already looks like one of the best in the country.
2) Jerrod Heard is going to be a good wideout
Speaking of quarterbacks, Heard demonstrated that his transition from QB to wideout is going very well. We know he has the speed and quickness to be a deep threat, but in this one, he showed the route running and understanding of defenses to make a difference all over the field, instead of just being a deep threat. He caught six passes for 46 yards, and was rewarded for his work with two touchdowns - the first two receiving touchdowns of his career. Heard looked very advanced for someone playing his second game at the position, meaning he should be a huge factor for the Longhorns as the season goes on.
3) Texas is the best team in the Big 12
While the Longhorns have looked strong, the rest of the Big 12 has not. Oklahoma lost to Houston. Oklahoma State lost to Central Michigan. TCU lost to Arkansas, and Baylor hasn't played anyone. Texas showed what they can do against Notre Dame, and backed it up against UTEP. No one else in the conference has done that, and that puts the Horns at the top of the pecking order going into conference play.
