The Texas Longhorns have a new coach in Tom Herman and he's not wasting much time in building a recruiting class. Texas only had a handful of commitments, but Herman does have a lot of official visits to use. With a recruiting dead period nearly here, the Longhorns are trying to make major waves on the recruiting trail. Here is all the latest Texas recruiting news and rumors you need to know:
5-star CB "still high" on Texas
Five-star cornerback Anthony Cook (Houston, TX) is one of the top prospects in the 2018 class, and Texas has long been one of the top schools on his list due to his relationship with Charlie Strong. However, he is still strongly considering the Longhorns with Herman at the helm.
“Texas is still high,” Cook said. “I feel like Coach (Tom) Herman is going to turn the program around. Texas lost to Kansas, man. I think Coach Herman get it right. Texas is always going to be around my top because I feel like home there.
“Based on what he did at Houston, I think he’s going to be good for Texas. I haven’t really gotten to know him a lot, but I was really excited about the hire. I feel like he is going to help them improve. I’m excited about it.”
The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder is ranked as the No. 2 cornerback and No. 18 prospect in the 2018 class by 247sports.
Ex-Houston commit sets official visit
Three-star running back Daniel Young (Houston, TX), decommitted from Houston this week, and now plans to make an official visit to Texas on Jan. 13. He originally committed to Tom Herman and the Cougars in September, and there's a good chance he will follow Herman to Austin.
The 6-foot, 210-pounder is ranked as the No. 63 running back and No. 937 overall prospect in the country.
4-star DT "medium" on Texas after offer
Four-star 2018 defensive tackle Calvin Ashley (Dallas, TX) received an offer from Texas not too long ago, and he says it's a big offer for him.
“It was a big offer for me,” Avery said. “I really wasn’t expecting Texas to offer me. They opened my eyes. Tom Herman was going to offer me at Houston. And he did right after he got to Texas. That was great. He’s a cool coach.
“I would say my interest is kind of medium right now. I didn’t really see myself getting that offer, so I want to learn about the program. I want to know more about the academics. I also want to meet the coaching staff.”
The 6-foot-2, 310-pounder is ranked as the No. 24 defensive tackle and No. 265 overall prospect in the 2018 class.
