The Texas Longhorns are reeling after Saturday's embarrassing 50-7 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs. Sitting at 1-4 with far more questions than answers, Charlie Strong's team once again finds itself in the front seat of the rumor train. With that in mind, here's our Texas Football Rumors Roundup for October 4th.
Charlie Strong Hot Seat Rumors Heat Up
The embarrassing loss to TCU did nothing to cool the seat of Strong. In fact, it's only made things worse. Most coaches get at least three years, but many are starting to wonder if Strong won't get that time, including CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli. As Fornelli puts it, "Very rare is the occasion where I believe a coach should be in jeopardy of losing his job during his second season. By and large, I feel any coach deserves at least three seasons at a school to prove himself before the ax falls on his head. But there are always exceptions, and I'm starting to wonder whether Charlie Strong may be one of them."
A win against Oklahoma is a must if Strong wants the noise around his job status to quiet. A loss to Oklahoma and a 1-5 start will only make the rumor mill crank up.
Texas DB Apologizes For Halftime Tweets
If you didn't already hear what happened, Texas freshman DB Kris Boyd retweeted a tweet about Boyd transferring to Texas A&M during halftime of Texas' loss to TCU. Boyd apologized for his actions Sunday, saying "In NO way did I intend to be disrespectful or disloyal."
QB Recruit Impresses
The Longhorns' top QB commit for 2016 is 4-star Shane Buechele. 247Sports checked Buechele out over the weekend, and here's what they thought of the QB.
"I saw Buechele play twice last season, and he struggled in both games, throwing multiple interceptions. This time around, Buechele was much more confident and comfortable in the pocket despite facing constant pressure. Buechele made some elite level throws, including some frozen ropes. Buechele has great arm strength and was extremely accurate just like he was at Elite 11 over the summer. Buechele also made some big plays with his feet. He’s not straight-line fast and isn’t going to run you over, but he’s very quick and elusive."
DT Target Leaning Toward Texas?
Texas needs some young blood at defensive tackle, and the Longhorns are hoping 4-start Jordan Elliott can help fill that need. The good news for Texas is that Elliott's twitter activity has featured plenty of pro-Longhorns images.
Per Wescott Eberts of SBNation, "the 6'4, 305-pounder is the most important defensive tackle on the board for the Longhorns right now and in the mix as the most important uncommitted target overall. And Texas looks like it's in the leadership position."
Elliott has offers from most of the major college football programs, including USC, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Alabama.
No Bowl Game For Texas?
Via Greg Wallace of Bleacher Report -
"Since 1999, Texas has only missed a bowl game once, with a 5-7 record in 2010, the season after its last national title game appearance. That was the beginning of the end of the Mack Brown era ... 2015 looks far worse. If they put forward more efforts like Saturday’s, the Longhorns will struggle to reach four wins."
That seems a little on the pessimistic side, but games against Iowa State and Kansas appear to be the only real locks on the schedule.
