Why coaches in the Big 12 are looking to integrate versatile tight ends into their offenses

ARLINGTON -- Playing against a Big 12 offense with four wide receivers “stinks” for an inside linebacker. At least that’s what Baylor senior linebacker Clay Johnston thinks when he sees a conference opponent break the huddle with that personnel.

“Big 12 is fast as crap man,” Johnston said Tuesday at Big 12 Media Days. “They’re speedsters. You have guys flying around ... I think it’s extremely hard to play linebacker and [defensive back]. There’s so much space, and with those gunslingers throwing them the ball, covering those guys is very difficult.

“Honestly, if a tight end was in the game, I was very happy.
