Think your team has a shot at making the College Football Playoff? Here's an inside look at the committee's process

GRAPEVINE -- The College Football Playoff selection protocol remains unchanged from its start four years ago.

So do new traditions, like ice cream treats and the rack where committee members symbolically "check their hats" and leave their allegiances behind in trying to pick the nation's four best teams.

Change is still coming to the playoff.

Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens has replaced Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt as selection committee chairman. He'll appear on ESPN weekly when the rankings are unveiled, beginning Oct. 30 until the final Top 25 on Dec. 2.

After a two-day mock selection exercise, looking at the 2013 season, Tuesday at the Gaylord Texan Resort, Mullens said he viewed his role as "explainer in chief.
