Texas Rangers sign free agent catcher Cameron Rupp to minor league deal

The Texas Rangers are adding some depth at the catcher position.

Free agent Cameron Rupp has signed a minor league contract with the Rangers and was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock, the club announced Tuesday. He is expected to join the team today.

The 29-year-old Rupp, a 2007 graduate of Plano's Prestonwood Christian Academy and former Texas Longhorn, was released by the Philadelphia Phillies last Monday. Rupp appeared in 81 or more games with the Phillies in each of the past three seasons and is a lifetime .234 batter with 39 home runs and 124 RBIs spanning 296 games over five years.
