A win over The Team Up North helped the Texas Longhorns jump to No. 2 in Sunday’s AP Top 25 poll, moving back the Ohio State Buckeyes following the 31-12 win over the then-No. 10 Michigan Wolverines.
Led by former Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers, Texas was dominant against Michigan in the biggest game of the young college football season, sending the Wolverines tumbling to No. 17.
While the Longhorns benefitted from scheduling a non-conference game against a blue-blood program, the Buckeyes were punished from an uninspiring start in terms of opponent toughness — Ohio State out-scored its first two opponents 106-6, but Akron and Western Michigan were projected as two of the worst teams in the country by ESPN’s preseason SP+ rankings.
