Texas makes staff shakeup official

AUSTIN — Texas’ football staff shakeup finally is official.

The Longhorns announced Saturday the hiring of Tulsa’s Sterlin Gilbert and Matt Mattox, and the departures of quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson and offensive line coach Joe Wickline, whose expiring contracts will not be renewed.

Gilbert will take over as offensive coordinator on a three-year deal paying him $850,000 per year, pending approval by UT’s board of regents. Mattox, who was named offensive line coach/running-game coordinator, will receive a three-year contract paying him $550,000 per year, pending regents’ approval.

Gilbert, who served as the co-offensive coordinator with the Hurricanes, is expected to install an up-tempo offense based on the one developed by Baylor’s Art Briles.
