Julius Whittier was the first African-American player to letter at Texas in football and among the first to receive a scholarship in 1969. That it happened this late is mind-boggling, but Whittier’s description of his experience here (below) confirms that it was long overdue.
Whittier made the most of his time at Texas going 20-1 in SWC play during his three years lettering, majored in philosophy, got his masters at the LBJ school, and completed his law degree at Texas. He went on to be a senior prosecutor in the Dallas District Attorney’s office.
He’s now in the Longhorn Hall of Honor.
