Texas football fell short to what was the best quarterback in the nation last year in the program’s biggest rivalry game year in and year out. That quarterback that led the Oklahoma Sooners past the Longhorns on two separate occasions was the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield.
The first time that Mayfield was the starting quarterback for the Sooners in the Red River Shootout against the Horns resulted in a heartbreaking loss at the Cotton Bowl for OU, back in 2015. For the 2016 and 2017 campaigns, Mayfield drove the Sooners past the Horns to claim two massive victories over some talented Texas squads under both Charlie Strong and Tom Herman.
