The idea came up for the Texas football program at the end of the 2017 campaign that then sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele could end up transferring out. Buechele went into the 2017 campaign as the likely starter for first-year head football coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns’ offense.
However, the job was pretty quickly taken aback from Buechele by a four-star dual-threat quarterback, and also a true freshman, in Sam Ehlinger. In most games last season, Ehlinger kept the Horns close and had some very admirable performances. A lot of pressure was placed on the shoulders of Ehlinger last season, especially against opponents like the Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys.
