Eleven months ago, Texas Longhorns cornerback Jahdae Barron announced his return to the Forty Acres for a fifth season by looking longingly at the Thorpe Award trophy won by his mentor Michael Huff before accepting Huff’s old No. 7 jersey.
There was nothing subtle about it — Barron made it clear that he was coming back to college to earn recognition as the nation’s top defensive back.

On Thursday, Barron officially accomplished that goal when he was named the Thorpe Award winner after a standout season that now goes down in school history with Huff and Aaron Ross, who won the award in 2006, a year after his teammate Huff.
