LANDOVER, Md. -- Already thin at linebacker, Texas lost starter Gary Johnson to a first-half targeting penalty.
Johnson was flagged early in the second quarter after a hit to the head of Maryland quarterback Kasim Hill.
"He passed the point of no return going at the target he was going at," Texas coach Tom Herman, "and then that target changed."
Texas was minus Anthony Wheeler for the first half with a targeting penalty carried over from late in the Texas Bowl. Freshmen Ayodele Adeoye and DeMarvion Overshown were sidelined with knee injuries suffered in preseason camp.
