OMAHA, Neb. – Top-five finishes from UT rising seniors Clark Smith and Madisyn Cox and rising sophomore Townley Haas highlighted night one for the Longhorns Sunday at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.
The men's 400 freestyle championship final featured Longhorns occupying lanes one through three in the form of Smith, Haas and Michael McBroom. Smith, the 2015 NCAA champion in the 500-yard freestyle and American record holder at 1,000 yards, dipped under world record pace through the first 250 meters (2:17.99) before slipping to second at 300 meters.
Haas held second through 200 meters and slipped to fourth at the 300 and 350m marks but he and Smith continued to challenge the leaders, Connor Jaeger and Conor Dwyer.
