Olympic Swimming: Texas Swimmer Townley Haas Paces Team USA to Gold

Haas was the second man in the pool for Team USA, finishing with a time of 1:44.14, faster than anyone else in the race by .71 seconds and the fifth-fastest 200-meter split of all-time. His strong showing pushed the Americans into a comfortable lead, winning the race by 2.4 seconds over Great Britain and 2.8 seconds ahead of Japan, who finished second and third, respectively.

The 19-year-old Texas sophomore is an Olympic rookie and made a strong impression already, placing fifth in the 200-meter individual freestyle finals on Monday night with a time of 1:45.49. This performance in the relay, however, is what Haas is going to be remembered for and can expect to become a national star and fixture on Team USA swimming going forward.
