My Story: A Longhorn Portrait of Sandie Raines

The junior All-American leads the cross country team into postseason racing.

As Sandie Raines tells it, she just wasn't very good at volleyball or basketball or really any contact sport. But maybe that's just because those sports aren't played in her element, which is in the outdoors, surrounded by nature, with little more than the beat of her own breath to provide the tempo.

"I love running in the morning, over the bridges of Austin and seeing the sun rise," says Raines, a junior runner for The University of Texas. "Just able to be conscious of everything around me – it's beautiful.
