AUSTIN — As usual, Red McCombs plans to spend plenty of time this fall in his luxury suite at Royal-Memorial Stadium. But he’s not expecting to witness a championship run.
“I’m extremely optimistic that this is going to be a great college football season, but the Longhorns won’t be sharing in that,” the billionaire San Antonio businessman said Tuesday. “I don’t believe they have the horses.”
McCombs, who’s donated more than $100 million to UT’s academic, athletic and medical research programs and has a bronze statue in his likeness inside the Longhorns’ home stadium, said he spoke recently with football coach Charlie Strong and was encouraged by what he heard.
