AUSTIN — Red McCombs woke up Monday morning still willing to help the university to which he’s donated tens of millions of dollars.
“I called the (Texas) president and athletic director and offered to coach, but they turned me down,” McCombs said. “No, that’s just a joke.”
McCombs, the San Antonio businessman who made headlines three years ago when he expressed public doubt about Charlie Strong’s chances for success at UT, said he wasn’t willing to say “I told you so” Monday. But after the Longhorns suffered a loss at Oklahoma State that dropped Strong’s UT record to 13-16, McCombs said he’s concerned more concerned than ever about the direction of the program.
