Longhorns freshmen making waves early in camp

AUSTIN — Charlie Strong knew all along he’d have to rely heavily on newcomers at some point this season. From the look of the first three days of preseason camp, the youth movement might begin when he sends out his starting lineups on Sept. 5 at Notre Dame.

Already, two freshmen who enrolled in school last January — middle linebacker Malik Jefferson and right tackle Connor Williams — are running with the first string. And three freshmen who are experiencing their first week of college football practice — wide receiver John Burt, tight end DeAndre McNeal and cornerback Kris Boyd — have wasted no time in demanding attention as they climb up the depth chart.
