Julius Whittier
Julius Whittier, the first African American letterwinner in the history of the Texas Longhorns' football program, died Tuesday morning.
Whittier arrived at Texas in 1969 and played for the Longhorns from 1970-72, the first two as an offensive lineman before moving to tight end.
During that stretch, Texas won the Southwest Conference title three years in a row and the 1970 national championship.
"To be a starting athlete on one of the best teams in the country -- there's just no comparison," Whittier said in What It Means To Be a Longhorn, a book authored by former Texas sports information director Bill Little.
