AUSTIN — A couple of days after I sat in front of my television and watched Colt McCoy and Quan Cosby team up to beat Ohio State at the Fiesta Bowl in January 2009, my boss called me into his office.
At the time, the San Antonio Express-News and the Houston Chronicle — both Hearst newspapers — were consolidating some of their coverage. As part of that streamlining, they’d decided to use one beat writer to cover Texas athletics for the entire chain.
And as I discovered that day, they’d decided that beat writer would be me.
