AUSTIN - Before Saturday's spring scrimmage, Shane Buechele confided to Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson that he was nervous.
Butterflies were predictable. If Buechele had not enrolled early at spring semester, he would have been getting ready for his senior prom at Arlington Lamar. Now he is locked in a very real competition for the Texas starting quarterback ahead of the season-opener Sept. 4 against Notre Dame.
Jefferson's advice to Buechele's nerves was to wait. "I told him, 'It will go away after you're first pass. After that be smooth,'" Jefferson said. "Everybody could see exactly what he did.
