KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Texas is a .500 basketball team now after falling 65-57 Thursday to Kansas in the quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.
And Shaka Smart is now a .500 coach (66-66) after four years in Austin.
The two numbers were linked in the aftermath of Texas' elimination from the tournament that all but ended the Longhorns' hopes of the NCAA Tournament.
Athletic director Chris Del Conte grew testy when asked if Smart would return for a fifth season. His buyout is a hefty $13 million and Texas officials have been generally pleased with Smart as a coach - outside of the on-court product.
