Another assistant leaving Longhorns

AUSTIN — Texas football coach Charlie Strong is about to replace his eighth assistant in two years.

Multiple outlets, including Orangebloods and 247Sports, reported early Friday that wide receivers coach Jay Norvell is leaving the Longhorns to accept a job as passing game coordinator at Arizona State. Norvell becomes the fifth UT assistant to leave the program this offseason, and the eighth since the end of Strong’s first season with the school.

Norvell, who was promoted to offensive coordinator on a temporary basis after Strong stripped Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline of play-calling duties one game into the 2015 season, had been pursuing other options since Tulsa’s Sterlin Gilbert was hired as UT’s new offensive coordinator in December.
