Heading into fall camp, the Texas Longhorns had an embarrassment of riches in the running back room.
Less than a week into camp, projected RB1 CJ Baxter was carted off the practice field on Tuesday with a pair of torn ligaments, delivering a blow to the depth and ceiling of that room.
“I hate it for the kid,” said Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian on Thursday, adding that Baxter is expected to make a full recovery for next season.
Thanks to the work of both previous running backs coach Stan Drayton and current coach Tashard Choice, however, Texas has plenty of horses in the stable but also now has narrowing margins to navigate the SEC grind, narrow enough that Sarkisian said that the team will assess the roster after this Saturday’s scrimmage for any possible additions to a running back room that recently added catcher Nik Sanders as a walk-on.
