The Texas Longhorns haven't announced the firing on Charlie Strong yet, but they're already working on luring their next head coach to Austin. A high-ranking source with ties to the athletic department, boosters and the football program told Chat Sports that AD Mike Perrin briefly spoke to the agent of Houston Cougars head coach Tom Herman in the last 24 hours.
Herman has long been linked to Texas, and is a logical fit for the University. One of his first coaching jobs was as a graduate assistant at Texas, and has spent several years coaching in the state. There was a report from ESPN before Texas' loss to Kansas that boosters were pushing for Herman.
The Houston head coach is one of the most coveted young coaches in all of college football. He led Houston to the Peach Bowl last year, where the Cougars beat Florida State. This season, Herman led Houston to wins over Oklahoma and Louisville.

Herman's agent is Trace Armstrong, who also represents Les Miles. If Texas wants to land Herman, he won't come cheap. Our source told Chat Sports that the minimum price for Herman is 5-years, $30 million. That would be a slight raise in salary for a Texas head coach, as Strong signed a five-year deal worth $5.2 million per year. Herman would become one of the highest paid coaches in college football at that salary.
There are multiple reports that Strong has been fired, including by Chat Sports. Strong said at his press conference Monday that he's heard those reports, but has not been told by the University that he's been fired. Perrin released a statement saying Texas would make a decision at the end of the season.
