There won't be any major developments in the Texas coaching search on Christmas Day, but as of the 24th, we're starting to get a better idea of how things stand. Based on public and private statements from coaches and the latest from our sources in Austin, we're starting to see which coaches are serious contenders and which coaches are just being linked to the job because someone thought it would be a neat idea. As things stand on the 24th, here are the top five most likely candidates to replace Mack Brown at Texas:
5. Jimbo Fisher, FSU Head Coach
Texas is very interested in Fisher, whose Seminoles are preparing for the National Championship game on January 6. Fisher would listen to offers, but it would take an obscene offer to pry him away from Tallahassee, where Heisman winner Jameis Winston will be returning for his sophomore season next fall.
4. John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens Head Coach
We've heard from multiple sources now that Harbaugh wants to settle down and start a college dynasty somewhere. He isn't sure if it's time to leave the NFL yet, but having won last year's Super Bowl, Harbaugh has achieved everything possible at the pro level. Texas has been monitoring his situation closely, and if the Ravens miss the playoffs, UT representatives will contact Harbaugh immediately. If the Ravens make the playoffs, though, Harbaugh is off the table, since Texas isn't willing to postpone their coaching search for just one candidate.
3. Jon Gruden, ESPN Analyst
Don't take any stock in the excuses being thrown around for why Gruden won't be coming to Texas - there's real mutual interest here. Gruden's ESPN contract is meaningless, and he's open to any alluring offers that come his way this Spring.
2. Gus Malzahn, Auburn Head Coach
Malzahn is this season's hottest commodity, and after sparking Auburn's incredible turnaround, he's high on the list in Austin. He's already called Texas his dream job, and he'll be getting a call from UT as soon as the national championship game ends.
1. Art Briles, Baylor Head Coach
As far as Texas is concerned, Briles has it all: he's a Texan born & raised, he can evaluate and recruit elite talent, and his offensive wizardry is near-legendary. Briles is interested in Texas, and Texas is interested in Briles - stay tuned.
