The Texas Longhorns have had two underwhelming years under head coach Charlie Strong, but they've been stockpiling an abundance of young talent that has many thinking the Longhorns could have a breakout year in 2016. For that to happen, they need some of those young players to step up. Here are three lesser known players who will turn into superstars for Texas this season:
QB Shane Buechele
Sophomore Jerrod Heard was the odds-on favorite to be Texas' starting quarterback job on opening day, but true frehman Shane Buechele's performance in the spring game showed that the job will be his sooner rather than later. Sterlin Gilbert will want to go with the QB that can best operate his spread offense, and Beuchele proved he can do so at a high level in the spring.
Quarterback play has severely hampered Texas' offense under Strong, an Buechele's ability means this team should be able to accomplish anything.
WR Collin Johnson
Johnson didn't receive a ton of hype coming out of high school, due in large part to him being injured for most of his senior season, but the 6'6'' kid from California has stood out in spring practices. Many are touting him as the best rookie in the Longhorns' incoming class, as he already has the physical makeup to dominate college competition. With Texas lean at wideout, expect Johnson to quickly become the team's go-to target in the passing game and become one of the Big 12's best as his position by season's end.
RB D'Onta Foreman
Foreman had an inconsistent freshman season, as you could expect, but he always delivered when he was given the ball. In the three games in which he got more than 10 carries, he racked up 416 yards and three touchdowns on 48 total carries. In the seven other games, he got just 265 yards and two touchdowns on just 47 total carries. He'll split carries with Chris Warren this season, but he will take over the lead role with Jonathan Gray gone.
