Billy Kennedy did not soften his words as he tried to explain the inexplicable.
Shortly after Texas A&M's 66-43 home loss to Missouri on Saturday, the Aggies' coach opened his postgame news conference with an apology. Kennedy said the team's effort was "obviously poor" in one of its worst outings of the year.
If a loss to a team that was previously winless in SEC play wasn't bad enough, Kennedy hinted at something worse.
In the week's two blowout defeats at home, the Aggies failed to muster the effort required to play competitive games. The Missouri loss capped a brutal five-day stretch that could potentially tank the rest of A&M's season.
