Texas A&M baseball signee Mason Englert of Forney is closing in on a state record held by former Rangers pitcher David Clyde.
Englert pitched a no-hitter in Forney's 3-0 win over North Forney in the regular-season finale Friday. He has now pitched 49 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings over his last eight starts, according to GameChanger box scores, as Forney heads into the playoffs that start next week.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations record book, the state record for most consecutive scoreless innings is 55 by Clyde for Houston Westchester in 1972-73. The Rangers selected Clyde with the first overall pick in the 1973 draft, and he made his major league debut for Texas at the age of 18 that same year.
