Texas A&M football: Keldrick Carper explains difference in Mike Elko and John Chavis

When Kevin Sumlin stole John Chavis away from LSU, it was hailed as a major win for Texas A&M football. It was supposed to be the final step towards greatness, towards perennial National Championship contention.

It wasn’t.

Chavis had a talent embarrassment of riches to work with when he arrived, but his defense got worse, not better, as the years went bye. He never lived up to the hype and it fueled the Aggies’ inability to compete with Alabama, Auburn and LSU on a year-to-year basis. They were stuck in 8-5 mediocrity.

One could look at the Chavis hire as a positive.
