Texas A&M celebrates life of Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow

COLLEGE STATION – R.C. Slocum always drew comfort from attending Southwest Conference meetings with his athletic director, John David Crow, in the early 1990s.

“Knowing my athletic director was the toughest guy at the table,” Slocum said with a smile Tuesday. “That was encouraging.”

Slocum and hundreds of others on Tuesday afternoon celebrated the life of Crow, Texas A&M’s first Heisman Trophy winner who died last Wednesday in College Station, his family by his side. A&M wouldn’t win another Heisman until 2012, when quarterback Johnny Manziel (now with the Cleveland Browns) did so.

Slocum, who was hired as A&M’s football coach the same day Crow became the school’s athletic director in 1989, spoke in Reed Arena at a tribute to Crow, along with UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey and A&M regents chairman Phil Adams, a longtime Crow family friend.
