PORTSTEWART, Northern Ireland- Texas A&M sophomore golfer Maddie Szeryk finished in a tie for ninth at the 112th Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship at Portstewart Golf Club on Thursday, defeating Leslie Cloots of North Carolina 3&2 in the round of 16 before falling to Olivia Mehaffey 1 Down in the Quarterfinals.
Szeryk knocked off Cloots, the reigning runner-up in this tournament, 3&2 on the par 73 / 6,262 yard course. The two were tied through four holes, but Szeryk took a two-hole lead by the turn. Combined with her defeat of Meghan MacLaren (FIU) in the first round, Szeryk defeated the reigning British amateur stroke play champion (MacLaren) and reigning British amateur match play runner-up (Cloots).
