SEC narrative of overall strength fell apart in Week 1

Remember the good old days? It was Oct. 29, 2014, and the first ever College Football Playoff rankings were released.

It was a banner time for the SEC. Mike Slive, who was in his farewell tour as conference commissioner, had to be doing backflips from his office in Birmingham, Alabama. This was the moment he’d been waiting for. A new era of college football had just begun and the SEC was front and center with three of the top four teams in the country.

Boom.

Six of the conference’s 14 teams were ranked.

Double boom.
