ERIN, Wis. -- Odd though it seems, it's no Aggie joke. Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, ranked first, second and third in the world, did actually miss the U.S. Open cut while Texas A&M senior-to-be Cameron Champ is tied for eighth.
No, Champ is not a made-up name. There's no punch line here. His game is legit. Halfway through the U.S. Open at Erin Hills Golf Course, Champ's 339-yard driving average leads the field.
And get this: While Champ, at 5 under, is only two shots behind leaders Paul Casey, Brooks Koepka, Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood, his goal entering the week was to finish as the low amateur -- and his closest pursuer in that race is a Longhorn, Highland Park product Scottie Scheffler, who is 1 under.
