Put Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin in the group of coaches who want young athletes to play as many sports as possible.
In this era of specialization, Sumlin made a strong point about playing multiple sports.
Sumlin is hardly a trailblazer in this regard. If you’ll remember, Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz made the same plea in his acceptance speech in Cooperstown, N.Y., last summer.
Still, it’s doubtful we’ll be seeing the same kind of tweet from baseball and basketball coaches. Notwithstanding Smoltz’s induction speech, high school baseball and basketball players — or, maybe, their coaches — do seem to see a need to specialize.
