COMMERCE -- The No. 8 Texas A&M Commerce football team took over possession on its own 10-yard line with 4:13 left in Saturday's NCAA Division II semifinal with an opportunity to nurse the clock and a seven-point lead against Harding. A few first downs would have propelled the school to its first national title game in any sport since it joined Division II in 1981.
But Commerce senior wide receiver D'Arthur Cowan was not feeling particularly patient. He took a first-down screen pass from senior quarterback Luis Perez 90 yards to the end zone, sending a record crowd of 10,120 at Memorial Stadium into a state of euphoria as the Lions (13-1) earned a spot in next week's title game in Kansas City, Kan.
