Quarterbacks Nick Starkel and Shane Buechele have known each other since middle school.
The former played at Argyle Liberty Christian before signing with Texas A&M, while the latter played at Arlington Lamar and then signed with Texas.
At one point, both were the starters for their respective college programs. Then all of a sudden, they weren't and were looking for another place to play.
This offseason, they both settled on the same potential destination -- SMU. The problem was there was only one spot. It went to Buechele.
"Before I could go on the visit, this dude pulled the trigger," Starkel said on an episode of "The Justin Dunning Podcast" released on Tuesday.
