One year ago, the thought was the defining hire of Kevin Sumlin’s career would be his defensive coordinator. If that was indeed the case, John Chavis would make for an enviable legacy. But it appears instead as if Sumlin’s fate will be tied to new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone.
Mazzone left UCLA to become the Aggies’ new offensive overseer; he replaces Jake Spavital, who was fired. Mazzone was one of the highest-paid assistants in the Pac-12, making around $850,000. He almost certainly will make more at A&M.
Mazzone, 58, is a proven commodity and has experience in the SEC as a coordinator at Auburn and Ole Miss.
