Pablo Carreño Busta has been nearly perfect at the United States Open, and his run continued Tuesday afternoon with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory against Diego Schwartzman in the men’s quarterfinals.
Carreño Busta, the 12th seed, has not dropped a set through five matches at the Open, where he will make his first appearance in a Grand Slam semifinal on Friday. He now awaits the winner of Tuesday night’s quarterfinal between Sam Querrey and Kevin Anderson.
Carreño Busta, a 26-year-old Spaniard, is a long way from 2012, when he underwent surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back, and a long way from 2013, when he attempted to work his way back up the rankings by winning seven straight events on the futures circuit, the lowest level of men’s professional tennis.
