Serena Williams opened her 2016 U.S. Open on Tuesday with a straight–sets victory over Ekaterina Makarova at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
In a rematch of the 2014 semifinal, Williams prevailed 6-3, 6-3 to open the night session.
Williams, who won Wimbledon in July, is aiming to win her 23rd Grand Slam title, which would surpass Steffi Graf for the most all-time in the Open Era. Williams lost in the semifinals of last year's U.S. Open.
Andy Murray and Lukas Rosol will cap Tuesday's night session on Ashe.
