PARIS — Jelena Ostapenko became the first unseeded women’s finalist at the French Open in more than 30 years by beating Timea Bacsinszky on Thursday.
The 47th-ranked Ostapenko, the first Latvian to reach a Grand Slam final, won, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3.
The last unseeded woman to reach the final at Roland Garros was Mima Jausovec, who lost to Chris Evert, the seven-time French Open champion, in 1983.
Ostapenko sealed the win on her second match point with a forehand winner to break Bacsinszky’s serve for the fourth time in the set. It was her 50th winner of the match, against 45 errors.
