RIO DE JANEIRO — Third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was beaten 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 by Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in the first round of the Rio Open on Wednesday.
Tsonga has had a tough week in Brazil. The Frenchman's doubles match was rained out on Monday and his match against the Brazilian in singles on clay was washed out Tuesday.
In late matches, No. 5 Dominic Thime of Austria faced Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in the second round, and No. 2 David Ferrer played fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
On the women's side of the combined ATP-WTA event, fifth-seeded Polona Hercog of Slovenia was beaten 7-5, 7-6 (3) by Sorana Cirstea of Romania in their second-round match.
