Within hours of Lleyton Hewitt's last match, Bernard Tomic was representing the next generation of Australian players in the men's draw.
The No. 16-seeded Tomic had a 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 win over Simone Bolelli on Margaret Court Arena to reach the third round.
Hewitt lost to No. 8 David Ferrer earlier on Rod Laver Arena, ending his 20th attempt to win the Australian Open. He'll retire after the tournament.
There was a video tribute featuring messages from the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.
